research project 2009–2010 Prague – Berlin – Bratislava – Budapest – Ljubljana – Warsaw – Vienna CCEA is currently engaged in two-year research project examining changes of the seven Central European capitals over the last twenty years. During the process of European unification we witnessed removing of state, national and other borders. Old, in cultural, social, political meaning, retire to the new – global. Live without freedom under the dictate of political totalities alternated freedom under the dictate of market totalities, materialized into the urban space. Is it appropriate to be ashamed for post-revolution architectural work, mistakes made for the sake of maximum profit, but also as a result of inexperience and naivety? What is the ideal image of central European city? Project creates a place for reflection of contemporary urban space and articulates its new perspectives.
Photographers are critically observing problems in their cities, especially in the social spaces reated by recently built architecture. The focus is not on the architecture itself, but more on the space that it has generated – shopping malls draining social life from the city centres, endless parking lots, managerial housing ghettos at the outskirts and cities enclosed between logistic centre ramparts. A travelling exhibition of large scale art photographs is presented in public space on Potsdamer Platz to address as diverse a range of inhabitants as possible and activate them to think about their own living environment.

First Urbanity workshop, based on comparative analysis, should bring us to the understanding how to read contemporary cities, and to look for the relevant approach. During projective part we will focus on issues as: what does the city represent today, what is the role of the capital in today Europe, what is the relation between Central European capitals etc. Through the project we will look for the proposals that will step by step lead us to future perspectives of the Central European Capitals.

Project reacts to the radical changes in a city landscape over the last twenty years. Architects, culture managers, sociologists, artists and other experts from seven European capitals critically react to the globalization of urban space as a form of the new European totality. Connecting the Central European capitals the project creates critical platform for the reflection of contemporary situation of urban space and for formulation of its future perspectives. Today, twenty years after the revolutions, when we joined the way of democracy and capitalism, comes the right time to review the development of cities and life space in terms of “new” Europe.
Urbanity contribution:
- critical view at cities through the media of art photography
- mapping, comparing and evaluating qualities of seven Central European capitals on the background of political changes
- new visions of Central European capitals and their role in the “new“ Europe
